[Stuff One.]
We are doing Latin America, yes? ...we're including the Caribbean in that, yes? Well then! Just a week or two ago I was babysitting and we got our hands on the game "Just Dance 2." One of the most amusing songs on there? Shake, Shake, Shake Sonora. It's a Caribbean song, and I was able to find a pretty nifty recording of it being played on steel drums... I highly recommend you go find someone with the game, and make them do the dance... just watch, but in the meantime see below::
[Stuff Two.]
A large reason as to why this blog is being posted so closely to the deadline, is because I spent a large amount of time playing an online "thumb piano" here.
[Stuff Three.]
Now back to Latin America. I actually, quite enjoyed the recorder-like or flute instrument today called the "Kena" or "Quena" so without question I therefore enjoyed this video offering it a bit more explanation:
[Extra Stuff.]
I wasn't sure if this alone would count as one of my pieces of "cool stuff" but for those of you with iPhones or iTouch, I encourage you to check out the following thumb piano app. I'm too cheap to pay a dollar for it, but I encourage you to get your hands on it.

I think it was interesting what the guy said in the first minute of the video about how the Andean people "cry with these things, dance and celebrate (or something like that)." That made me think of how we approach our own instruments. I feel we are often more or less performing and not really "feeling through the instrument." Maybe it would enhance our musical experiences as well as personal ones if we approached our instruments in that way.
I LOVE steel drums. I want to shake hands with the guy who figured out how to create pitches on an oil barrel. That's true recycling at its finest.
And the link to the online thumb piano is AWESOME. I know what I'm doing today.
You have so many awesome links on your blog! I loved the online thumb piano(I was so happy when I played a scale haha) as well as the link to the IPod app. I want it so bad, but I don't know if I want it enough to pay for it.
The Caribbean song was awesome. It brought a lot of memories of when my middle school band director took all these giant steel trash cans from the school grounds. He then cleaned and repainted them and used it as steel drums. Of course he had to return it but it was pretty funny and was cool to play actually.
So without a doubt, the thumb piano link was my favorite! I probably spent 10 mminutes on it just now...haha. I also like the idea of the steel drums! They sound really cool. I've learned a lot about percussion instruments in the past few days, but I don't know too much about the steel drums. Do you know much about them? I found this video :) and I think you might like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IAteD9IiLs
I love the first song you posted, and I have a video to share along with it. this is the first thing I thought of:

I'm guessing you have seen this movie, but its one of my favorites and I immediately thought of it when I listened to your post.
I LOVE steel drums. They have the coolest sound, but the best part is watching them be played. Have you ever seen a live performance? It is absolutely amazing! And I'm pretty sure I just spent about 15 minutes on that thumb piano. Where do you find these things?
I think I just may have to get that thumb piano, if only for Tally's amusement. And would you believe that I first really became aware of the "Shake Senora" song watching the movie Beetlejuice. In the movie theater. In 198......something?
